  • – Overhead cranes are designed for a specific application/environment.
  • – Design constraints determined by SWL & cycles/hours in operation.
  • – Design, installation, operation & maintenance effects overall “Useful Life”.
  • – Useful life consists out of more than one Safe Working Period (SWP).
  • – International standards (ISO/FEM/BS/SANS) underpin design & SWP.
  • – Typical SWP is 10 years after installation.
  • – Crane owner responsible for legal compliance/adherence in terms of standards.

    – Crane /hoist inventory.
    – Condition of crane & equipment.
    – Design envelope vs. usage.
    – Systems in place (Safety & Legal compliance).
    – Maintenance & asset management strategy.
  2. Identify Gaps (Risk) in each of these 4 stages.
  3. Capture all findings on database & issue reports.
  4. Data analytics: Site – Section – crane – component.
  5. Track progress Verify actions are closed out to acceptable standards.
  6. Initiatives & subsequent outflows:Continued improvement projects
    – Refurbishments
    – Replacements
    – Adjusted maintenance tactics
    – Engineering controls to operational risks
  7. Change behaviour & awareness i.t.o crane safety.
